On the 17th of November 2017, I had the privilege and honor of representing the American University in the Emirates at the EEG’s 17th Inter College Speaking Competition. This was a very valuable and fascinating experience as it merged the idea of saving the environment for the future of the planet, and the idea of academic competition. I was chosen as one of two speakers to engage in competition again several other universities both from the UAE and outside it.
Along with two speakers, we were comprised of a team of fellow students that worked together as researchers, advisers, and supporters. We worked together to gather information and developed our strategy for our presentation. Through teamwork and support and direction from Mrs. Sabina was very useful in motivating us for this challenge.
By participating in this competition I was able to sharpen my public speaking skills as well as become better informed on the seriousness of the topic of the environment. This competition was unique in that, it not only instructed participants to address the problems but also required them to present solutions to these problems. This mentality of rewarding students based on the creativity of their solutions is the key to creating a world where problems are addressed and solutions are discussed.
The Emirate’s Environmental Group did a phenomenal job organizing the competition, and the inspiration that students gained through listening to the hosts’ opening statements was evident. The EEG did a very good job laying down the blueprint of what can be achieved if motivated university students come together to find solutions to an issue. Preparing for this competition would have been a herculean effort if we did not have the guidance and motivation given to us by Mrs. Sabina. All things considered, I believe that this competition helped me have a better understanding of the environment and gave me invaluable experience regarding the task of public speaking.
